Always be aware that although many companies now offer to protect your no claims bonus, i.e. you can make 1-2 claims per year and still get your discount on your next renewal, remember that if you are intending on moving insurers the year after making any claim the next insurer may not recognise the protection. Although your current firm may allow you to insure at the reduced cost and state you still have your five years no claims, when you get a quote from a different insurer they will ask whether you have made ANY claims in the past 3-4 years and it will affect your premium and you may have to accept a reduced no claims bonus from them. Car insurance, it can be a nightmare with every company saying they are the cheapest and with the new wave of internet only insurers growing year on year. Many are turning to brokers and online car insurance comparison websites to find them the cover they need at the cheapest price but with many of these services quoting upward of 300+ insurers on their books it's hard to put faith in the results you get. Over 300 insurers? You can count the top ones using just your fingers so who are the other 292? People are becoming more web savvy and are beginning to be able to spot the quality online services from the 12-year working out of their bedroom and insuring services should be no harder to separate. Normally the big give away is at the bottom of the pages on each provider's website where you will see "insurance is provided by Company B, not us" - such firms are simply resellers of other people's insurance products and normally you will get better cover and a better price by simply going direct to Company B. This is different from firms that state that they are "underwritten" by another company like AXA or RBS.
There are more car insuring companies than any other type of insurer out there. The TV, radio and web are flooded with advertisements looking to steal you away from your current motor cover provider, but you might not have as much real "choice" as you think. Many big financial backers will create five different brands selling the exact same product just in a different way. For example, one of their brands will sell the quality insurance and have a name like "Top Quality Cover Ltd" which has everything like courtesy cars and breakdown cover all included. Their other brand will be called "Cheap Cheapest Cheapy Ltd" and will sell the exact same cover but the items like courtesy cars and breakdown cover will be options that you can add to your policy. The next brand will be called "Cheaper & Webby Ltd" which will only deal with quotes and claims via the internet which gives some savings to the customer. This sort of variation will go on throughout the range of brands the financial institution will create - the same product, just sold differently. Why they can't just create one company that allows you to select these options in once place simply baffles us. †
