This Essex-based provider offers what it claims to be cheap travel insurance for UK residents. Quotations and purchases can be handled through the website or, in case of special circumstances such as pre-existing medical conditions, through its Basildon call centre.

A range of single trip and annual policies is available, with cover for skiers, backpackers, golfers, business travellers and cruise holidays. Children are covered free up to 17 years when travelling with an adult on a single trip policy. At the other end of the scale, single trip cover is provided up to the age of 99.

Policies include third party insolvency cover, which is aimed at people who put together their own holidays and therefore don’t use a bonded tour operator or travel agent. This covers the situation where any of the companies that are involved in the supply of the holiday should fail.

Cover is provided by AXA Travel Insurance Ltd and underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance, a division of Belgian company Inter Partner Assistance SA. Travel assistance abroad is handled by AXA Assistance. All these companies are part of the global AXA Group.

1Stop Travel Insurance is a division of Drakefield Insurance Services Limited, which is an insuring intermediary that was set up in 1998 with a stated aim of acquiring and developing travel insuring businesses. It acquired Go Travel Insurance in 2004 and then sold a controlling interest to the AA in 2007, now owning AA Travel Insurance as well as Go and 1Stop. Also in 2007, the AA and Saga were brought together under Acromas Holdings Ltd, which also has Direct Choice Ltd and Drakefield Holdings Ltd under its wing.

Drakefield Insurance Services specialises in delivering travel policies via the internet and its UK call centre, and has outsourced management contracts to several travel insurer's brands (including Elephant at www.elephant-travelinsurance.co.uk and Admiral at www.admiral-travelinsurance.co.uk). It was voted the Fastest Growing Independent East Anglia broker of 2005/6 by the Insurance Times while Go Travel Insurance won the Best Travel Insurance Web Site award at the 2007 Travolution awards, with 1Stop Travel Insurance getting equal second nomination.

Due to the corporate structure, the 1Stop website has various connections: Online Travel Insurance links to www.etravelinsurance.co.uk, a Drakefield travel cover provider, Travel Insurance from the AA accesses the AA Travel site, and Travel Insurance Comparison offers travel insurer comparison through www.quotebanana.co.uk, which is owned and operated by Drakefield. Various AA travel extras (such as airport parking and breakdown cover) are also offered through the site.

It seems that with these site switches and multiple branded services, some of you are getting confused on where the main site is. www.1stoptravelinsurance.co.uk is the correct web address with the .com version being owned by someone else. The onestoptravelinsurance .co.uk/.com versions are also owned by other companies with all three showing links and adverts to similar services. We've seen 1stopttravel .co.uk/.com show up in the search logs also, but there are actual travel companies hosted on those websites not affiliated with the insurer you're looking for. The 1Stop website is unmistakable really, in bright yellow and large logos everywhere, but once you're there, you should probably bookmark it to save any future problems. †

26/08/2009 Form was longer to fill in than most travel insurers I've tried today - but it did make it feel more tailored (i.e. I'm not paying for things without being asked first!) Quote for me, wife and daughter to go to USA was £63, we paid £90 last year for AA insurance. Will be going through the policy booklet, though, and will let you know if we have to claim and run in to any problems.
