The American International Group Inc is one of the world's largest insurance and financial services organisations. More pertinently, UNAT DIRECT Insurance Management Ltd, for which AIG Direct is the trading name, has been providing personal insurance in the UK since the early 1990s. It has a registered office in Croydon and all contact through Stoke-on-Trent.
AIG's best publicised activity in this country is probably its £56.5 million four-year sponsorship of Manchester United, although this is due to end after the 2009-10 season largely due to the well-known problems within the finance industry. Until then, the company's insurance products are still publicised on the club's website and its fans can take advantage of discounted rates on travel insurance when following the team.
A range of insurance cover is available, including home insurance through a separate website (www.aigdirecthome.co.uk). Policies are offered from a limited panel of insurers, with optional home emergency cover provided by Royal & Sun Alliance and Brit Insurance handling the legal protection cover.
Car insurance also comes through a separate website (www.aigdirectcar.co.uk) and is selected from a panel of leading providers. Optional breakdown cover is provided by Equity Red Star while motor legal protection is by Allianz Insurance plc.
AIG Direct in the UK is re-branding as Chartis UK for its health, travel and personal accident insurance. As one of the UK's largest general insurance companies, with offices throughout the country, Chartis Insurance UK Ltd provide products and services to more than half the country's top 1000 companies as well as private organisations and individuals. They are part of Chartis Inc property, casualty and general insurance organisation with a 90 year history, serving more than 40 million clients in other 160 countries. According to sources, the name change is to help increase sales in the UK where the name AIG is generally only associated with bad news and failure: "Initially Chartis was named AIU Holdings but the name did not distance it far enough away from AIG's parental issues so it was decided to go to a full rebranding." -- Chartis Insurance Entry on Wikipedia
It is therefore possible that we could be announcing the rebrand of other AIG products in the near future.
Travel insurance used to be accessed via www.aigdirecttravel.co.uk which kept the pattern simple and covered the usual single trip and annual policies with cover for special activities, winter sports, extended stay holidays, golf trips and business travel. Personal accident cover provides financial help in the case of injury, with separate plans available for older people. Perhaps the main area of cover is health insurance, with the company's HealthChoice product offering a range of options and the WellWoman Plan aimed specifically at women who are diagnosed with any one of seven female cancers. Cover is guaranteed for any woman aged between 18 and 69 who has not yet had cancer, with no medical needed and no account taken of family history. A cash sum is paid on diagnosis with no restriction on how it is spent. Other benefits are available to provide emotional support and guidance, with a personal nurse adviser contactable by telephone and a choice of either a home visit from a specialist cancer nurse, telephone sessions, residential complementary therapy or a programme of therapy or counselling.
All these products can now be found on the www.chartisinsurance.com website, (note that www.chartisinsurance.co.uk doesn't work), and we'll try to update the above information as we receive it.
Not least with this rebranding exercise, but simply as an international company, attention must be paid to web navigation. www.aigdirect.co.uk is the UK insuring website with www.aigdirect.com currently showing the US brand (despite rumours of it's sale). However, www.aig.com and www.aig.co.uk both show the same information, both targeting UK users. With the use of various separate websites, as mentioned before, it would be advisable to save/bookmark a site you want to come back to. This will save any possible errors - though it seems that this particular company has purchased the majority of it's possible variants which is always good to see. †
