Argos Insurance offers home, car, pet, travel and credit card insurance all available direct from their website where you will find various discounts to provide you with a competitive insurance quote, as well as the now-customary discount for buying online. Not one of those internet-only insurers though, so if you prefer to speak to someone on the telephone rather than buying online, there is a phone number to call.

Argos travel insurance offers you a range of single or multi trip policies and there is also an option for add-ons such as winter sports or family cover. You will find that all policies include cover against cancellation and essential medical expenses. There are a couple of significant conditions apparent - if you need emergency medical treatment you have to contact Argos Travel Assist and any additional travel, accommodation and repatriation costs also have to be approved before hand by them.

Argos home insurance will provide cover for buildings and contents separately but, like most, give extra discounts when you combine the two and you will also receive a further discount if you can achieve their no claims bonus status. ArgosInsurance in this respect is a brokerage though and will search from a panel of leading insurers in the UK to find a competitive quote for the level of protection you need. All policies include keycare protection and legal cover. The keycare covers all your keys against loss and will pay towards the costs of a locksmith if you have to replace your locks and keys - though we found the ?10 reward offering a little strange i.e. not enough to be a plus and just makes it look stingy overall.

Argos pet insurance has 3 levels of cover to help you with the cost of your cat or dog’s vet fees, boarding fees, 3rd party liability (note: dogs only), death from accident or illness, cremation fees, theft or straying, advertising and reward, overseas travel, quarantine fees, repeat tick and worm treatment and even covers you for bereavement counselling. The treatment period is 12 months for silver and gold policies but if you buy a platinum policy, then the period of treatment is unlimited. This multi-level pet insurance offerings are common amongst third party resellers like Argos and supermarkets and you really need to have a good look through as often the "premium" stuff is what you would have expected to be covered in a basic policy.

Argos can also provide you with a car insurance quote by searching their panel of leading insurers to find you the best value for your circumstances and this service will apparently be available online ... at some point. Argos car insurance offers a range of extras as standard including a new car replacement if your car is less than a year old when it is written off, legal protection, 90 days cover when travelling in the European Union and emergency medical expenses if you have a traffic accident. Keycare protection is also included as standard. This gives you a 24-hour assistance service if you lose your car keys and should you become stranded, up to 3 days car hire. We did spot that their motor insurance does not cover personal belongings such as mobile phones, money, jewellery nor any supplies connected to your trade or business.

Unlike most offshoot insurers like Tesco and Sainsburys, Argos has chosen not to create a dedicated website for their financial services. Naturally, this means that you have to do a bit of digging to find the right links and locations to the services from the their main site at www.argos.co.uk (note: www.argos.com is a completely different company), but once you're there things are pretty easy to follow. It does seem strange, though, as they own two perfectly good domains in www.argosinsurance.co.uk and www.argosinsurance.com which could be nicely decorated with targeted and simplified navigation which would make them more appealing compared to their competition. Maybe this is just an additional revenue generator for them rather than a serious jump into insuring services. †

Your Comments on Argos:

17/10/2008 If I hadn't known that Argos offered pet insurance, I would never have found the link on their website - it's hidden away at the bottom of the page. I also find it confusing that they ask for your pet's name and date of birth: seriously, does anyone know their pet's actual birth date? Their form was a bit flaky: it took a couple of goes for it to recognise my address. They offer three different levels of insurance. Their basic level was fine for my needs and was pretty competitive. There's a mandatory £60 excess which is standard as far as I've seen.
