The Co-operative Insurance Society Ltd (CIS) has moved into the insuring services market and their aims reflect our definition of "true savings" whereby you are offered the cover you would expect but at a price you wouldn't. The Co-Op insurance website states one of our favourite admonitions and that is don't leave it until you have an accident to find out that your car insurer doesn't cover all the things you need.
CoOperative car insurance comes with all the usual features you would expect such as courtesy cars, 24-hour helplines and personal belongings cover but there are other benefits such as the growing trend of named drivers no claims bonus earnings. Named drivers on a policy can earn a no claims discount of their own which will really help when they come to insure themselves. As usual, though, such no-claims extras will only really apply if the named driver takes out insurance with the CoOperative Bank Insurance Services, most other insurers will not recognise the no claim build up.
CoOperative car insurance is non restrictive either allowing anyone between 17-75 to apply for cover and to show their sincerity there is generally an introductory discount available for those with zero no claims bonus. As you would expect with the Co-Operative Insurance company there is a twist to the tale as the brand that brought you fair trade now brings you ecoinsurance - the first motor insurance policy to let you offset the "damage" your vehicle's CO2 emissions cause. At the time of writing, CoOp insurance will offset 20% of your car's CO2 emissions by investing in projects like rainforest reforestation, renewable energy sources and energy efficiency plus ensure that repairers reuse/recycle materials like old body panels and plastic parts - see the CIS insurance services website for full details.
Their motor insurance, whilst comprehensive, also comes with savings to entice you to switch such as money off of breakdown recovery and the customary discount for buying online (though we have noticed varying terms for the discount e.g. it could be different if you are under 25, so make sure and read carefully) - though with savings of £167 being quoted it is certainly worth a look.
As mentioned, along with Co-Op Car Insurance you can get breakdown recovery cover as well. Obviously most people prefer to use one of the big three for breakdown rescue but the Co-operative Insurance Co. have thrown in an added incentive to at least give them a try by offering £10 compensation if the mechanic assigned does not reach you in under an hour (becoming a standard offer across breakdown insurers these days). Cover looks similar to that offered by dedicated break down services but always check the small print as I don't think we've ever seen a CIS car repair truck so you may benefit from asking exactly how they work before proceeding to obtain this cover.
CIS home insurance doesn't look any more enticing than any other home insurer at first glance, with standard discounts offered for buying buildings and contents insurance together. But, Co-Op offer to let you build up a no claims bonus on your home insurance, something rarely found at the time they started with it, so with a no claims discount of up to 40% and no-claims bonus protection available you could find that the savings surpass even the cheapest discount home insurance provider out there. †

04/02/2010 I took my car insurance out with the co operative, i had a horse run out in front of me on the A1 i was luky i was not killed, it took me 3 days of battling with them to get my courtesy car, they took over 3 weeks to process my claim, have got legal cover will not fight my corner and have put the accicent down as my fault even though the horse owner has got 3rd party liabilty. The whole episode has left me distressed, and lost of my no claims! Would never use them for anything or recommend them
