CornhillDirect.co.uk is the website of Cornhill Direct Insurance where you can buy home, car, travel and van insurance where you will generally receive a discount for buying any of which online. The website is easy to navigate and to compare policies against those of other insurers. Cornhill home and motor policies have been given a five star quality rating by the primary independent market research company, Defaqto.
Cornhill began life in 1905 as a fire insurance company and is now part of one of the largest general insurance groups in the UK, Allianz Insurance Plc who are part of the Allianz Global Group.
In 1919 Cornhill offered their first workman's compensation policy against personal accident, by 1924 they had issued their first motor insurance policy and in 1957 they initiated the fifty percent no claims discount for policyholders of their car insurance.
CornhillDirect Insurance was launched in 1994 and because of its high brand recognition was the only line of business to keep the Cornhill Insurance name after April 30th 2007 when, due to restructering, Allianz Cornhill changed its name to Allianz Insurance. At the same time, as part of the expansion plan Allianz purchased Home and Legacy who are specialists in home insurance, to operate as a separate broker.
When you buy Cornhill Direct's standard contents policy you will be given an emergency number so that you can get in touch with a tradesman who will be able to help you if you have any problems such as burst pipes, and allows a sum of money towards parts and labour, although obviously there are certain terms and conditions to this and those terms could have changed by the time I've finished writing this article ... but, currently, the content policy also covers for the loss of cash in the event of water damage, fire and theft.
This home emergency cover is an optional extra to add to you home insurance and it protects against a variety of domestic disasters. It includes a 24-hour help line with access to fully vetted tradesmen to fix drainage and plumbing problems, roof damage, lost keys, vermin and electrical problems.
Fully comprehensive motor insurance includes a courtesy car (though typically only as long as you use one of their "approved repairers"), accident recovery both here in the UK and whilst driving in Europe, lock cover if your keys are stolen or lost, medical expenses, cover for prams, child seats and wheelchairs, stereo cover and cover for your personal belongings, all within limited amounts but most don't seem stingy enough to force note.
A range of extras can be purchased separately. These include complete breakdown rescue at home or while travelling in the UK or Europe, legal protection, a fortnights car hire if you car is out of use and no claims discount protection.
If you are looking for pet insurance, Cornhill Direct have a Select Plus policy as well as the standard Classic policy, which covers your pet for each injury or illness for as long as the condition lasts, providing you don't break cover at any time.

23/11/2008 Would not recommend them for Buildings Insurance. I made a claim for flood damage to one room in June 2007 and it is still not settled. There were constant delays and I was frequently given wrong and misleading information. Renovation work started in FEB 2008 but the tradesmen supplied were incompetent. It took five months instead of the quoted two weeks and most of the work had to be ripped out and done again. The compensation paid so far is only £100 which goes nowhere considering the emotional and financial costs caused by living in a building site for months on end. To add insult to injury the policy has rocketed and there has been more than a two thousand percent increase in the excess payable.
