From a purist's standpoint Green Flag is supposed to be the only real choice when it comes to breakdown recovery services. These days you can get break down cover from almost any insurer and vice versa most breakdown companies now sell insurance (but these every supermarket is selling both too!). If you do ask for breakdown assistance to be added to your policy with most insurers, 9 times out of 10 it will actually be GreenFlags operators that will be doing the leg work.
But we did get a little cynical whilst reading their current advertising slant. The focus of any rescue service should be that when you do break down they get to you as fast as they can with staff that are qualified and experienced and with the tools to do the job. Green Flag say they have this covered and there is an entire page dedicated to empathising with drivers over this expectation. By pushing the concept that they are 100% break down services and nothing else and that is why they are better, it does seem to lean toward criticising other rescue services that have branched out into everything ... let's face it, they're talking about TheAA who's increasing web of services could see us eating TheAA Ginger Biscuits in the next year or so.
By focussing all their efforts on a single product, GreenFlagRecovery intend to provide the quickest and the best possible service for their customers. Their emphasis regarding their mechanics having local knowledge is probably best highlighted where we are based - the north of Scotland. Up here it would be impractical to have a recovery vehicle every few miles because, unless sheep start driving cars, they would have nothing to do. Every time I have called for Green Flag up here it has been a local garage that has come out, not a franchised, labelled, clean and shiny van. Not much information is given on the website regarding how GreenFlag actually work their service but I can't say I've ever seen any of Green Flag's vans on my travels.
So what do you actually get from GreenFlag's Rapid Breakdown Cover? For cars you get 24-hour assistance 365 days a year from their national network of breakdown specialists with an average response time of around 30 minutes. They state even with three million customers they still fix 86% of their customer's cars at the roadside. Pricing is competitive but not astoundingly cheaper but you do get a no-claim discount if you don't make any call outs in the previous year of membership. They have five levels of cover with tailoring options from whether you are covered for european recovery to whether you would like a hire car if yours is going to take some time to repair. They also cover motorbikes too all with Green Flags 24/7/365 assistance. But, as an incentive to convince you that GreenFlagRecovery is the fastest, if they can't get to you in under an hour they'll give you £10 (at time of writing). †

21/05/2010 Took out personal cover and was told at the time that this would cover me on any vehicle. This was important to me as one of my cars is over 30 years old. I was told this was not a problem, however, when I broke down in said classic, this did become a problem, as they do not assist vehicles over 16 years old. So despite informing me that they would cover me, they do not- Don't get caught out like this! Needles to say my cover was soon cancelled.
