JS Insurance services corner many niche markets that you won't normally find being offered by the larger insurers the focus solely on large items like your home and car. Unlike most insurers which staple student insurances onto their parents home cover, JSInsurance offer a completely separate policy that can be taken out by the student themselves whilst living at their university digs. There are also separate policies for anyone to take out for high value computers and laptops, something you normally only get offered when you originally purchase a computer or laptop from the store it came from and normally at a much higher price. Mobile phones can also be insured though from what we can tell premiums will be the same as what you would get from your mobile phone services provider (e.g. around ?5 per month). Healthcare cover is also available through JS Insurance's partnership with AXA, with medical and dental cover offering similar benefits and layout to the HSA plan we reviewed earlier this month. How you are benefited by purchasing such through JSInsurance's website we have no idea and they state no incentives. The car and home insurance locator is even more detached with what seems to be a simply a cut and pasted search engine from another insurance comparison service.

The only real cover that seems to be provided by themselves is JS Travel Insurance, though that is also underwritten by AXA. All the usual suspects are there with single trip, annual cover, winter sports, backpackers / students / gap year insurance and policies for travellers over 65. Cover should be comprehensive due to the big name backing it but there is no mention of any discounts or again any benefits of purchasing AXA's travel insurance through JSTravel Cover instead of directly on the AXA website. JSInsurance is part of Jade Stanley Ltd who have been running since 1999 and since then have created several websites mainly aimed at insuring travellers. Many offshoots such as www.ski-insurance.co.uk and www.boardsure.com have sprung up but all the services are available at www.jsinsurance.co.uk so if you plan on returning it is probably best to bookmark the site. Note - www.jsinsurance.com is owned by a different company though offering similar services so make sure you're visiting the right one.

03/10/2008 Judging from their website, JS seem to specialise in travel insurance, but they also do computer insurance, which is what I was looking for. Their policies are underwritten by Axa. Their laptop insurance cover includes 90 days worldwide cover as standard, which is useful, as my laptop usually goes with me wherever I am. JS quoted me £90 to insure my Apple MacBook for a year, which seemed a bit expensive, particularly as it's now a couple of years old. I don't think I will use them - I'm sure I can do better elsewhere.

09/09/2008 My initial view is that this is a rather confusing website. The initial impression is that it is a specialist travel insurance company but they also appear to be generalist insurers of anything from mobile phones to medical insurance. The overall the impression is of no clear purpose rather than being presented with a well laid out set of options.
