We are impressed that Legal & General have restricted themselves to only offering products that they have long term experience in and resources for. Rather than jumping into car, pet and every other type of insuring out there, they have stuck to similar products to their renown skills with investments and pensions by offering to insure your home (probably everyone's biggest investment in life) and your actual life. Not phased by the current trend of new "even cheaper" insurers popping up daily - no corners seem to have been cut and you will most likely find that a quote from Legal & General will not be the cheapest out there. But, to get you on board so you can spend a year seeing if they are worth that bit extra you can generally get discounts on your first year's cover. If you have three or more years no claims with your current insurer then you get discount, you also can get a discount if you buy both buildings and contents insurance together and then there is normally a further discount if you buy online through www.legalandgeneral.com.

Cover is far more comprehensive than most with a large number of items already included that you would normally have to pay extra for such as home emergency cover for plumbing and heating problems, insuring your child's possessions whilst away at university and credit card protection. The usual suspects are all there as well such as 24 hour helplines, increased cover during special times like christmas and replacement locks if you keys are stolen. An unusual addition is the premium waiver cover which will pay your premiums for up to 12 months if you become unemployed - hugely important should such ever happen. Obviously with this brand there will be a fair bit of tailoring allowed such as increased accidental damage cover for both buildings and/or contents but be sure to read the policy details fully (posted on their website) to make sure you really need the extended cover.

Legal & General offer two main types of life cover. With their term life cover, as with all, you can choose the duration of the policy for level term assurance which, if you die during the term, will pay out the lump sum of money agreed on at the start of your policy. Mortgage life insurance, designed to help pay off your mortgage in the event of your death is also available with both level term (fixed payout) and decreasing term (the amount covered decreases with the mortgage debt) available. Mortgage life insurance policyholders automatically qualify for their 24-hour moving day rescue service, SmoothMove. So if there's an emergency when you move house, services such as car recovery, hotel accommodation and legal advice are just a phone call away. Both their life insurance policies include Terminal Illness Cover which means that the policy will pay out if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness. You can get a quote for either online too.

On the Legal & General website there is plenty of help features. Some months ago they tried to personalise their help section by creating a cartoony character to answer your questions - Ask Jo. A rather strange addition as "Jo" just stares at you and tilts her head from side to side as the frequently asked questions section acts just as any normal one would.

On that note, once you reach the Legal & General website you might want to bookmark it, with the huge range of variations out there it could save you time. Be aware that the "&" character cannot exist in a web address so www.l&g.com, www.legal&general.com or www.l-&-g.com will get you nowhere except a blank error screen. I realise that is confusing as the entire online experience they provide has the "&" character plastered everywhere instead of "and", but that's just the way it is. And you can't abbreviate either as, whilst www.landg.com gets you redirected to the correct site, some variants such as www.l-and-g.com get you sent to a land surveyor in the US. Not quite what you were looking for. †

Your Comments on Legal and General:

30/04/2010 L&G are ridiculous, i have an on going claim for damage where the bracket holding a portable TV and stereo fell of the wall and smashed our glass dining table. They politely called me a liar and requested a large amount of work on my part to be done, putting me out of pocket. I said send an assessor round, they said "it wasn't financially viable" for them to that. So i did what they wanted, they called back and again politily said we were still lying and are now sending an assesor round. They are trying to get us to withdraw the claim, this will not happen. I went with L&G becasue they are a well known and i believed a respectable company, but unfortunately only so when it comes to taking your money.

31/03/2010 L&G are a joke - submitted claim for leaking shower which they lost/had no record of - when I resubmitted they wouldn't honour as they said the leak was gradual - yes became graually worse because they lost the claim!! Had been insured for 10+ years with them & no claims - will not be renewing.
