Getting insured by M & S certainly appears to be a far cry from the Asda and Tesco offerings. As opposed to simply offering no frills off the shelf insuring products, Marks & Spencers want to be taken seriously with their financial services and attempt to give comprehensive cover rather than simply undercutting the competition. To avoid appearing as another supermarket trying to make a fast buck you won't find any huge flashing banners on their website saying "cheapest" or "save £££", the focus, like with Marks and Spencer stores, is on quality and customer satisfaction.
Starting with Marks&Spencers car insurance you'll find top level cover with expected items such as a courtesy car and legal protection standard. You'll also get UK and European breakdown recovery cover included with your policy plus thoughtful extras such as key and lock replacement cover should you lose your car keys. Not exactly stripped bare budget motor insurance is it? Unfortunately discounts are also less forthcoming with no mention of the level of no claims bonuses that can be achieved. We have seen a discount of 10% for buying online before but this can come and go so keep your eyes peeled. Again, any discount is often only available online so you might want to phone first to ask relevant questions then jump back online to get the benefit of both worlds.
Marks & Spencer's Home Insurance, like most, will come with a discount if you buy online and cover is no less comprehensive or customized. There are two levels of cover, premier and standard, plus a few extras that you can add to either policy. Again, things are a little confusing on the website so you might want to phone up to clarify any queries you might have before going for the online discount. You would expect any decent insurer to offer home emergency cover with any house insuring policy and M & S are no different allowing you to purchase such cover in addition to your home insurance to protect you from plumbing, central heating system and boiler failures. MarksandSpencers Travel Insurance, though not as flexible or comprehensive as a specialist holiday insurer, certainly does offer compensatory levels that are competitive - just make sure that you add all possible extras to you policy to ensure you are covered for any activities you might want to try whilst away. Not many travel insurers offer discounts and although M and S have made such a discount, it is by no means an attention grabber usually only 5% off and only if you buy online - but a saving is still a saving and with cover generally under the hundred pound mark even 10% would not make you jump for joy. MarksandSpencer pet insurance on the other hand exceeds most general animal insurers in cover levels and even some specialists with up to £7,000 a year for illness and injury with their premier service and up to £4,000 a year even on their basic cover. You get all the extras too with money to help if you pet is lost or stolen and 24 hour freephone access to Vetfone for advice. Although again the discount for buying online will generally be much smaller than motor or house cover, this is in line with offerings elsewhere but with Marks & Spencers you get discounts at Best Pet Pharmacy also.
One of the more popular Marks&Spencer offerings is their wedding insurance. Most of the time if you want cover for your big day you have to go with a specialist insurer who you've never heard of. Having a big brand like M&S behind you whilst getting married does give a lot more peace of mind. You're protected from cancellations, ruined wedding attire, failed photos plus legal expenses should you have any disputes with services providers. The addition of stress counselling is a nice touch. Most people prefer big names when they apply for life insurance like Prudential or they prefer to have their life insurance with their mortgage provider. To entice you away Marks and Spencer are one of the few life insurers that offer a discount when you buy online and a gift voucher is generally thrown in when you take out a policy. As both their mortgage cover and life term cover have the usual terms and both include terminal illness cover, the fact that M & S are probably not going to disappear overnight means that you could probably benefit from obtaining at least some more info before settling elsewhere.
There seems to be some confusion over their website name as many try things like www.m&s.co.uk and www.m&s.com - unfortunately the "&" character is not valid for domain names so all you will see is a big error page in your browser. This may lead many to think that their site is down for maintenance, especially if you hit www.marks&spencer.co.uk or www.marks&spencer.com next only to find the same error page staring you in the face. The offical site is at www.marksandspencer.com with www.marksandspencer.co.uk redirecting there for your convenience. We suggest that you bookmark the site, or individual page you want, whilst on it to avoid problems when trying to return later as many of the variations are owned by completely different companies (e.g. www.markandspencers.com which just shows similar advertisers) and the last thing you want is to get caught out if one of those sites decides to offer a similar service or simply try to get your personal details from you. †

22/04/2010 Rather a waste of time getting a quote if you have modified your car's power; in my case, a remapped diesel. They are only willing to quote if you have the EXACT power figure! You can't even give a power figure much higher than it can possibly be and get a quote on that. So, visit a rolling road first, or try elsewhere.
