The people behind the Petplan website really seem to care about animal welfare and as well as supporting several charities and re-homing centres they have their own Petplan Charitable Trust. Customers are given the option to donate ?1.50 when they buy their policy and this has allowed the charity to award nearly ?5 million in grants for welfare, disease studies, and countrywide education projects.

If you have an exotic pet, such as a bird of prey, tortoise, lizard or snake, you will find a direct link from the main website to Pet plans Exotics Insurance, which is sold by Brooks Braithwaite and underwritten by Allianz Insurance Plc. The Pet Plan website is simple to navigate and it only takes a couple of minutes to find out how much it will cost to insure your rabbit, cat or dog. As long as your pet is more than 6 weeks old, all you have to do is select the type of pet you have, complete a secure online form and choose from the range of cover. Your animal will be covered in case of an accident immediately but, like most pet plans, cover for illness won’t start for fourteen days.

The website contains some interesting extras such as a Puppy Gazumping Guide with tips on how to buy a puppy, a Meowch Cat Guide with tips on first aid, a cat care and road safety booklet, a guide concerning the animal welfare act, the Horse Handbook and a Travel guide which helps you have a holiday with your pet free from stress. If you are a breeder or looking to buy a puppy they even have a linked website where breeders advertise litters of kittens and puppies.

Petplans Covered For Life policies are ideal if you are concerned that your cat or dog may develop a long-standing illness like eczema or arthritis that needs extensive veterinary treatment. On the other hand if you are just looking for cover that will cover the preliminary expenses of veterinary treatment then the Pet Value policy will be fine and if you are not sure which to choose, you will find a table on the website to help you decide. If you are not comfortable buying insurance from a website, then there is a sales hotline that is open from eight until eight, six days a week.

Another branch linked from the main website is Pet plan equine where you can buy horse insurance for all ponies and horses and even those in their senior years. Cover can be arranged for novice riders to top competition as well as polo and hacking and there are options for vet fees cover including any complementary cover that a vet recommends. A rider between the ages of 5-75 can choose the optional personal accident addition, which covers anyone who you have given permission to ride your horse. †

19/01/2010 i cannot praise petplan highly enough. I have a policy wth cover for life for my siamese cat, chime. she has a chronic rhinitis problem that she will have for the rest of her life and has had approx £2300 worth of veterinary treatment in the last year. with my policy, the vet gives chime every treatment she requires, the receptionist deals with the paperwork and petplan pay them direct. its that simple! never had a problem with them and cant recomend them highly enough.

03/01/2010 Pet plan are a nightmare to deal with and its easier getting a refund from the tax office than get paid out on a claim. They paid a direct claim to me instead of the Vet and then treated me as though I'd made the mistake. Choose one of the cheaper options. Steer well clear.
