To the point - is the best way to describe Primary Insurance, unlike most insurers their pages are not filled with sales pitches or flashy graphics. Certainly most people prefer a bit of pizzazz when looking for insurance cover but as travel insurance is often an after thought maybe Primary are actually on to something? Travel insurance isn't exactly the most expensive cover out there like motor or home insuring so spending hours searching for the best prices when you still have your packing to do is probably not what you want. All Primary's travelling policies have short forms and online quotes and although we wouldn't expect anything to be missing if you have any special requirements such as sporting activities or health problems then it is always best to double check the level of cover even if you are in a rush. They offer single trip insurance, annual multi trip insurance, wintersports travel insurance and something called budget insurance but they don't say exactly what that means though it is targeted towards students looking for that gap year abroad. By selling travel insurance mainly online Primary's costs are kept low and they do get Best Buy votes for their travel insurance by national newspapers and consumer magazines. Of course, price is not normally the main concern when policies to cover whole families are generally under ?100 and you've paid ?3000 for your holiday. PrimaryInsurance also offer home, motor, pet, life and wedding insurance though all are brokered. Savings probably can be had but whether these are the result of negotiations by PrimaryTravel or whether you would save money with those firms if you went directly remains to be seen. Certainly if you're not one for scouring the web yourself a broker is always the way to go.

Note should be made of navigating to this insurer as many of you have tried several variations in our search function. The official site is at www.primaryinsurance.co.uk (though at this time it still says 2006!) and although they seem to own www.primarytravelinsurance.co.uk and www.primarytravelinsurance.com, neither redirects you to their main site nor do they have any information about the company themselves. www.primarytravel.co.uk and it's .com version on the other hand is not owned by Primary at all and simply shows a bunch of related adverts. Best to check the site before you bookmark it just in case. †

01/10/2008 Primary Insurance specialises in travel insurance and advertises that they can provide single trip cover from only £5.84. They also offer a 15% online discount, which is generous compared to some companies. Primary Insurance's quotation form is very short and simple, and allows you to customise the cover you need by choosing e.g. baggage, holiday dispute cover etc. They quoted £9.99 for a 2-week trip within Europe, which is the cheapest quote I've had anywhere (despite it being double the price they were touting!) and includes baggage and money cover. I'd consider using them.

15/06/2008 Offer loads of different types of travel insurance, not just the usual single trip and annual options. I was looking for backpackers insurance and the budget option they offered was ideal. Was a little bit complicated where you had to select which activities which you would participate in though because there were some things which seemed to be included in more than one category on the last. Gave a good summary of the policy before you purchased, although I think because it was cheap the excesses were quite high.
