Specialising in life insurance, this website searches more than 300 life insurance plans from twelve leading providers. These include mainly well-known names such as Aviva, Scottish Widows and LV. Cover is either provided on a decreasing term basis, which is designed to protect a repayment mortgage with the amount of cover gradually reducing, or level term insurance that pays a fixed lump sum on death. Plan costs vary but may offer different extra features, such as terminal illness cover, a help line or a 'special events' option.
Protected.co.uk is a trading name of Netbasic Ltd, whose permitted business under FSA regulations is 'insurance mediation' and which offers insurance without any specific advice or recommendation. This company, which is based in Fareham, Hampshire, is actually an online marketing company that specialises in financial services. What is does, therefore, is develop and manage the technology and structure that enables the insurance to be offered and sold. Consequently, it doesn't seem to get its hands dirty by actually being involved in the selling and administration of the insurance itself ... sound familiar? ;)
All business enquiries relating to the website are directed to the company but all life insurance queries go to any one of four companies. These are Hampshire-based Cover Matters, Freedom to Insure and Reassured plus Top Branch, which operates out of London. These companies all offer insurance of various types and all share the same email address (customerservice@protected.co.uk), which suggests the messages are assessed and redirected to the most appropriate company.
Netbasic currently runs three websites for financial services. The life insurance site (referred to as 'the Life Search Engine') is www.protected.co.uk, reckoned to be used by 40,000 people each month and started in August 2005 (or was 'born' then, according to the website). There's also www.accepted.co.uk ('the Loan Search Engine') that was the first product in August 2004 and is used by 50,000 people per month. The most recent development is www.trapped.co.uk ('the Debt Search Engine'), which is used by 40,000 people a month and was launched in February 2006.
The impression is that the company concentrates on its strengths, (marketing), and leaves the rest to the insuring specialists. From the customer point of view, as long as the information provided is accurate and the products are from reputable companies, the actual structure of the operation shouldn't matter. The main thing is getting the correct cover at an affordable price. After praising their marketing abilities, branding is not one of them apparently so watch out for address type-ins as www.protected.com is owned by a totally different company. †
