A natural move for the RSPCA to capitalise on their good name and perceived caring for animals is to offer to insure those animals so that if the worst does happen they are covered so that they can receive the best care. Obviously you would expect the level of cover to exceed most general insurers and you would be right with up to ?6000 per condition with their gold level cover and up to ?3000 with their silver level.

One thing to be wary of when looking for the best deals on animal insurance is that some insurers will offer a maximum level per condition and other will set a maximum claim level per year. Obviously if you can get a good deal with a per condition policy that would be best especially with cats and dogs which generally seek out trouble on a regular basis. The usual suspects are also there with the RSPCA's cover such as money for lost or stolen pets and boarding costs should you fall ill. The rest of the cover should be just as comprehensive with this venture being backed by AXA.

There is plenty of clarity regarding what the RSPCA receives every time someone takes out a policy through them with 20% of the premium you pay going directly to the charity to help with their running costs (?82 million a year apparently). We were confused then, considering that they are making customers aware that 20% of the money they pay is given to the charity, that they are offering a 5% discount for applying online. This may just be an incentive to use their electronic service to save them a bit of cash as staff and freephone numbers do run up a bit of a bill on large scales.

If you're feeling really charitable why not apply online, save the 5% and donate that as well? Don't be put off by their online advertising slogans that seem, to us, a little insensitive and badly worded - "they're not the only ones that take a hit" gives terrible mental images and suggests the worst scenario for pet insuring which may never happen to your animal. The RSPCA's offical site is www.rspca.org.uk though they have set up a specialised site for their pet insuring at www.rspca-petinsurance.co.uk (the .com version does not currently work). †

Your Comments on RSPCA:

25/05/2010 Their attitude is a typical “hide behind the small print” but take your money anyway approach. We had our Cross Lab insured with RSPCA when she reached about ten years old. For a few years everything was fine but age eventually got the better of her and after complications with her spine we were advised by the vet to have her put to sleep. The vet , aware we had RSPCA insurance, prepared the paperwork for us, which we dully submitted thinking all was fine. But no… “We don’t insure dogs over ten!” was the response. No matter who we ring, same answer, and our letters have not been replied to. Totally disgusted, and will never use them again.
