The plan for Sheila's Wheels grew from a great deal of research and the discovery that ladies have less driving convictions and make fewer claims. It is also thought that girls have a better attitude toward driving, cars and are more considerate to other road users. SheilasWheels is therefore a high profile brand of car insurance that targets its products to women, (although it does sell to men), whilst also selling home insurance from their website at SheilasWheels.com.
Sheilas Wheels is a brand of Esure, a leading UK direct insurer, who effectively opposed a directive from the EU that may have caused lady drivers to subsidise men through womens car insurance premiums. As part of Esure, that also makes it part of the Halifax Bank of Scotland Group which is the fifth largest bank in the UK.
They decided they need a totally new brand, a new look for motor insurance for the average girl/woman and so the women's insurance company Sheilas' Wheels was launched in October 2005.
The Sheilas' Wheels brand has gone from strength to strength partly due to its advertising campaign with a pink convertible, iconic Sheilas clad in pink sequins and a catchy jingle, which proved so popular that an official fan site was developed to download the jingle, adverts, lyrics and photos etc.
According to the website the name Sheila was derived because of the fact that Australia is one of the few countries in the world where one woman's name represents every girl and woman. What genius came up with the idea of using Australian slang as the branding for UK insurance policies we have no idea - but it certainly sounds much better than any British slang words typically used to generalise the female gender and WomensWheels would just be bland.
Sheilas car insurance claim to offer a great deal to all women buying car insurance in terms of benefits, price and service, and recognise that women are likely to be carrying a bag with a purse and valuables in their car when they are driving. Consequently handbag cover is included in their standard comprehensive car insurance policies. How this differs from standard car contents cover offered by others insurers is not completely clear.
This company says that it only uses female friendly car repairers who have been advised how to be more amenable to womens needs and follow a code of practice to meet the individual desires of the female motorist. Therefore they will arrange visits to fit in with school runs, help with child seats and be compliant with picking up and dropping off when it is daylight etc. (We would love to hear your comments if you've ever experienced a "female-friendly" garage.) The standard comprehensive car insurance policy also gives holders access to a counselling line, which is run by trained professionals to help women cope after an accident or with a driving matter such as road rage.
In 2007 a competition for people to appear in their television adverts attracted eleven thousand applicants and led to thirty members of the public starring in two advertisements. At the beginning of 2008 Sheila's Wheels took over the sponsorship of the ITV's National Weather from E-On after their eighteen years of sponsorship. This year also saw the launch of Sheilas' Wheels home insurance with benefits such as registering free online to uncover identity fraud.
As with the motor cover, the home insurance contents policy aims to pick up some speciality female items by covering items such as make up, clothes and shoes in your home as well as the more typical personal money, credit cards, replacement locks and liability. Home emergency cover will arrange for a trustworthy contractor to fix your repairs up to a limited amount, and pest cover will arrange for a contractor to exterminate pests such as squirrels, rats or mice etc. †
