Simple Cover car insurance services from Norwich Union does exactly what it says on the tin. It strips away all the extras you normally pay for by default with most insurers and just leaves you, still with comprehensive insurance, forking out less money for practically the same cover. The only thing we don't understand is the leap to creating a separate brand identity for this product when NorwichUnion could quite easily have just placed it next to their current line of products. Indeed, when you log on to the site to check out SimpleCover's motor insurance cover you are confronted with a direct comparision to the NU car cover. Items that are left out include breakdown cover, legal services cover, courtesy car, foreign use, european breakdown and windscreen damage cover but you can add a selection of any of those to your policy if you want and guideline prices are marked next to each. Certainly this clarity is welcome and maybe that is why this had to be a separate brand, Norwich Union didn't want regular comprehensive cover buyers to see exactly just how much they were paying for seemingly included services.
Certainly the brand is taking off well as a separate entity but it may not be for everyone. For a start, there is no claims discounts possible but the no claims bonus protection only allows for two claims in the space of five years which is far more stringent that most insurers. This creation seems to be in line with the recent surge in "even cheaper car insurers" (yes, you know who were talking about) which only allow online purchasing and policy account management to keep admin costs down and the actual cover itself is much less than you would get if you were insured elsewhere. The pitfall of such firms is to believe that they are actually saving you money, certainly you are paying less but that is only because the product and the service is considerably reduced. If you only need cheap car insurance then Simply Cover is certainly ahead of the others by having a big backer like NorwichUnion but if you want decent cover at a cheaper price then looking for savings and offers with NU themselves might be better. †

31/10/2008 Simple Cover is provided by Norwich Union, who say it is "car insurance built around you". Having already got a quote from Norwich Union, I wasn't sure if this would be any different. I didn't like their vehicle search form - because I didn't know my engine cc, it took ages to identify my car. This isn't something I've had to provide to any other car insurance company. I did like the fact that their form is very short. Oddly, their quote was £70 cheaper than the one I'd got direct from Norwich Union! However it still wasn't very competitive based on what you got so I wouldn't use them.
