Motor insurers in the UK mostly expect a long-term arrangement from their customers with policies covering a 12-month period and automatic renewals to ensure loyalty. This can be a problem when people want to test drive a privately sold car, use someone else's vehicle for a short period, cover an additional person for a specific journey or various other similar situations. The only practical solution previously, with most insurers charging upward of £100 to switch insured car's details, has been to take out or change an annual policy and then cancel it. But even this can run high costs and administration fees, not to mention all the hassle that is involved.
Into this gap in the market stepped Temporary Cover Limited (trading as Temp Cover Insurance and based at Fleet in Hampshire), which offers car and van insurances, both on a comprehensive and third party basis, for between 1 and 28 days. Cover can be arranged on the spot so that motorists can drive away vehicles immediately.
Coverage can be organised by intermediaries as well as individuals, with an Agents and Brokers login facility on the website. All policies are stated to be underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance, which also offers motor insurance through its More Than brand. In fact, they are actually owned by Royal & Sun Alliance, which bought its parent company, the Surrey-based Fyfe Group, in 2007 as part of its strategy to expand into niche markets and improve its offering to the motor trade. The Fyfe Group seems to have been a family business with Paul Inskip as Managing Director, Alan Inskip being Development Manager and Hilary Inskip also being part of the team. Tough to give a stereotypical view of family run businesses bought over by large corporations, the success of such often relies on which two companies are involved. Other companies now appear to be entering the temporary insurance market, which is likely to become increasingly competitive. The result is that cover is being tailored to meet particular needs and is being restricted to certain types of drivers only (such as excluding young drivers). As ever, the onus is on motorists to ensure they have adequate cover.
Looks like you're covered from errors with www.tempcover.co.uk and www.tempcover.com both showing the same site and both hyphenated versions of the domains being owned by them as well.
Although there are some other short term car cover companies, Norwich Union (now Aviva) being the most common amongst car dealershipts, a large portion of "other" companies have connections with TempCover.com such as the www.budgettempcover.com website from Budget, the trading name of BISL Ltd. The website is remarkably similar to that of TempCover, even having the same address and FSA number, although a different telephone number. It does, in fact, specify that Temporary Cover Ltd will provide the insurance, so the same company may well be behind other short term vehicle cover that is available within the marketplace. Indeed, selecting temporary cover at the AA's website (www.theaa.com) and those of various other intermediaries also redirect to Temp Cover's site. It would appear, at least for the present, that it remains the dominant player for short-term cover amongst consumers. †
