More Th>n Pet Insurance Reveals the Darker Side of Pet Loving Britain: The huge campaigns by the government warning of the dangers of passive smoking whether at work round your colleagues or at home around your children have failed to get the point across that smokers are putting everyone at risk when they smoke near them. A study by More Th>n pet insurance has revealed that 44% of pet owners who smoke in Britain do so around their pets, with a huge number of them smoking whilst the animals are just young.
Information released by animal welfare groups mirror the government's offerings regarding passive smoking around people stating that passive smoking exposes pets to over 4,000 toxins which includes 40 known cancer-causing substances plus a helping of carbon monoxide as only 15% of cigarette smoke is actually inhaled by the smoker themselves. Animals are actually more at risk than humans in the same situation because they groom themselves, which means taking in extra harmful substances that have landed on their fur, not just those inhaled.
Animals are not any more immune than humans to the hazards of second hand smoke, with the resulting diseases and ailments being identical to those that would be inflicted on a human. The fears is that the smoking ban due to be introduced in a couple of month's time will cause even more damage with people opting to increase their home smoking habits over going out. Despite the ever popular theory that Britain are a nation of pet-lovers, More Th>n revealed that 38% of smokers polled stated that they had no idea that second hand smoke could damage their pet's health. Even more staggering was the revelation that more than one in ten of them would not stop smoking now they knew they were harming their pets. †
