JS Travel Insurance Gets Branded for AXA's Failures: What happens when a broker has a problem underwriter? JS Insurance found out the hard way when their name was included in press coverage of an AXA underwritten travel insurance plan they sold that refused to pay out for a couple whose flight was cancelled.
The story in the Guardian related how a couple had phoned AXA after their Ryanair flight was cancelled due to strike action, only to be told that no advice could be offered at that time. On calling the following morning they were told that flight cancellations were not included in their travel policy and their overnight accommodation would not be paid either. The article did clarify that it was AXA's policy that was at fault with no mention of cancellations being excluded from the policy - of course, AXA maintain that the policy did not say they were included either.
Unfortunately for the broker, early on in the article it is stated that the couple "had bought SuperPlus travel cover from online broker JS Insurance. This is the most expensive policy it offers, and is underwritten by Axa". No other criticism of JS Insurance was given but certainly the association of one of their brokered products being the subject of such controversy cannot help their business.
This isn't the first report the Guardian has made on JS Insurance's SuperPlus travel cover. Around the same time last year they were practically recommending that exact product for people heading off to Germany for the World Cup based on the huge price difference between their online quote prices and those offered by high street travel agents.
So are JS Insurance equally liable in blame for the products they sell? Certainly they do not have as much distance as an insurance price comparison website and as they directly sell AXA policies, with no other panel insurers, then maybe the vague wording is a concern they should have raised prior to the incident if they want to come off in better light. †
