More Th>n Travel Insurance Reports Dangers of Driving Abroad: Last month More Th>n reported on the dilemma between eco-friendly Brits and the price of holidays in the UK. This week they reveal statistics regarding the problems experienced travelling abroad. Can the carbon conscious consumers ever catch a break?
According to the report, around 20% of people want to reduce their carbon footprint and avoid things like air travel but find that holidaying in the UK is incredibly expensive when priced up against the great exchange rate and lower expenses you can get in countries like the US. Naturally, price wasn't the only concern, with most people looking to get away from British weather, not just their home. With holidaying abroad on the increase, green-pushing groups and politicians are going to have to look for more ways to entice people to stay in the country with high food, drinks and accommodation charges being noted as the main turn-offs for spending your holidays here. With the total price, including flights, of going to places like Spain often proving to be several hundred pounds cheaper than simply driving to places like Devon and Cornwall it's not hard to understand the frustration people feel.
Many people opt to drive to closer locations in the EU, but many of our neighbouring countries, especially the newer members of the EU, have terrible road accident records. According to the report, conducted by More Th>n along with Brunel University, the countries most people associate with bad drivers such as Italy and France are not the main ones to avoid and Germany, considered to contain the safest drivers and roads, actually ranked eight behind Britain who took sixth place. The report comes ahead of the plans to create a universal driving standard for all EU countries.
Whether you plan to take your trip in the UK or abroad ensure that you have the correct travel insurance and always read over your car insurance cover regarding driving abroad, whether you are taking your own car or renting, to make sure you know what you are and are not covered for. †
