 Halifax Pet Insurance - The true costs of pet ownership: We see the adverts on television and on the web showing us images and telling us stories of abandoned dogs, cats and other favourite pets. All of them asking for money to help look after these animals that have been cast aside but none stating the possible causes for those animals being put out of the home that originally took them in willingly.
According to Halifax Pet Insurance we are a nation of animal lovers, some extraordinarily so with 1.5 million admitting that their daily routines are dominated by their pets with 1.1 million of them cooking them special meals rather than giving them store bought pet food. 650,000 even admitted to cooking for their pet more than their own partners or families.
It appears that one of the largest causes may be financial burden. In a release by Halifax Pet Insurance they estimated the average cost of a puppy is £282 with the average kitten being around £92 as the initial layout. But the report also revealed that many seriously underestimated how much it would cost to look after their pets, especially if they should require medical treatment. Apparently 59% of people asked said they did not look into the costs of keeping their pet before buying with the remaining 41% underestimating possible vet bills by more than half.
The "buy now pay later" mentality seems to be overtaking us as this is not the only area of insuring that this happens. Many younger drivers seek out the car they want and then try to insure it rather than finding out what cars are the cheapest to insure. One source told us that they had purchased a convertible Escort only to find out that insurance costs would be between £2,500-£3,000 - more than the car was worth!
Any responsible individual, though, would not simply throw the animal out on the street or tie them up next to a dual carriageway. This epidemic should really be addressed as the burden on charities such as the RSPCA grows year on year with more people unwilling to try and sell the animals themselves or bring the animals down to the shelter directly.
