Bookmark and ShareMore Th>n Home Insurance Release Their Annual Flooding Tips: With even more floods expected around the country this year, back around comes More Th>n home insurance with their flood release memo which we saw last year around the same time. Many may see this as a cheap attempt to get some free marketing across news sites nationwide but with flood damage last year estimated to be in the billions, why would you want to put your name forward as home insurer to those most at risk?

The release itself hasn't changed much in a year, with the usual tips such as keeping an eye out for flood warnings on TV and checking the Environment agency's information services regularly for updates. Sandbags for commonly affected areas and keeping important documents and sentimental items upstairs are good ideas but often un-heeded as many floods come on without warning with most people being interviewed stating something along the lines of "I woke up and the whole of downstairs was under three feet of water". In fact, the only forward thinking people seem to employ towards flooding is to buy house insurance. But how protected are you?

Consumer reports and television shows such as Watchdog have highlighted the number of insurers that simply refuse to pay out in certain types of bad weather despite the insured individual thinking they are covered. So how does More Th>n match up considering that they are putting their names out there regarding flooding victims?

Well, their "New for Old" promise does extend to floods and the only items that seem to be excluded from flooding damage are your fences, hedges or gates. But, as with all insurers, you need to keep them apprised of any changes to your home. With MoreTh>n they even require you to notify them if the number of bedrooms change otherwise your policy could be voided when it comes time to claim. There are also clauses, again like with most insurers, that if you have not maintained your home correctly they may reduce the amount you are awarded. We weren't happy with the strange wording surrounding their rot clauses and they seem to give themselves an option of paying out devaluation money instead of repairing which doesn't sound great so you should probably get clarification before going ahead.

Overall there does not seem to be a huge number of back doors so they can wriggle out of paying should your house fill with local river water. Why they would encourage flood risk homeowners to buy their home insurance policies then is anybody's guess. † Bookmark and Share
