Direct Line Pet Insurance Calculates Cost of Pet Grief to Employers: A recent poll by YouGov Plc which questioned over one thousand dog owners across Britain has revealed estimates that it is costing businesses whose employees suffer the loss of a pet over £8million a year. The figure is based on their sampling of the five and a half million dog owners in the UK with 12% of those polled stating they had taken paid leave to grieve for their loss.
The 12% is a rarity as many stated that they would not admit to their bosses that they were upset by the death of their pet and instead would state a personal illness or use up their allotted holiday time instead. Those that did go into work reported that their work was generally substandard being unable to concentrate and just waiting to clock out.
The poll, commission by Direct Line Pet Insurance, asked more personal questions than most with many of the respondents detailing how they had felt the loss of their dog as severely as the loss of a friend or relative.
The research confirms what many insurers already know and use to determine which products would be most attractive to people insuring their pets. Many emotionally helpful additions are thrown in for free now such as 24 Vet Helplines for general queries about your pet's well-being and counseling help lines should your pet pass away. An understanding of how important our animals are in our lives is highlighted with almost all insurers offering to refund your holiday costs should you wish to cancel due to the ill health of a pet.
Such details are not apparent in any other type of insurance such as life insurance, home insurance or car insurance. Speculation would be that we are always looking for the cheapest version of such policies rather than the most comprehensive. †
