Sainsburys Car Insurance Estimates 2 Million Possible Non-Insured Drivers: This month has seen two huge research findings published by Sainsburys insurance regarding the non and under insured problems nationwide. They estimate that there are over 2 million people in the UK without insurance or who have given false information to obtain insurance and therefore most likely voiding any cover they have should they have to make a claim.
This puts the burden of any accidents caused by these two million plus drivers squarely on the shoulders of honest insured individuals. In the event of an accident the un-insured party will simply receive a fine and some points on their licence. The individual who is insured would have to make a claim on their own insurance for the damages to their car resulting in them having to pay the excess of hundreds of pounds and possibly the loss of their no claims bonus, which could set them back thousands over the 4-5 years it will take them to re-establish that bonus.
Figures reported by Sainsbury were that amongst insurance types, 15% of people polled admitted making inaccurate statements when applying for car insurance with reasons such as they could not be bothered to look up the correct information or that they thought it might increase their premiums being their excuse. It also detailed that people in Scotland were the most likely to lie about information when obtaining car insurance with 33% of Scots polled admitting to such.
What was pleasantly surprising was that over a third of the estimated one million people who drive without any insurance at all were actually being prosecuted. According to the Home Office there were nearly 400,000 people arrested for not having insurance in 2005. With penalties such as fines, points on your licence and now the added deterrent of crushing your car, hopefully we will see a reduction in the number of uninsured individuals putting more responsible drivers at risk. †
