HSA Health Insurance Outline Work Health Benefits: Yesterday saw two big press releases on employee health from HSA. The first detailing how alternative medicine can help reduce the number of sick days, with the second regarding the growing phenomenon of work related stress. They quote studies by Employee Benefits magazine who polled their readers.

Apparently almost a quarter of businesses stated that they believed alternative medicine such as acupuncture, physiotherapy and osteopathy could help the health of their employees. Un-surprisingly in the now desk and computer dominated work environment, muscular and skeletal problems were stated to be the main reported symptoms of workplace ill health.

Stress continues to be a growing problem especially for larger companies. Almost half of businesses polled believed that stress was a major factor in most of the sick days taken by their employees. The figure got higher for large businesses with over 10,000 employees with 64% stating the stress was related to most of their work absences. Despite acknowledging the huge burden stress related illness puts on their company, many admitted to taking no, or very little, preventative measures.

Naturally, HSA commissioned this research because they sell employee health insurance and these issues are part of their employee health care plans. Physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, homeopathy and stress counselling are all listed as treatments where certain levels of payment can be recouped through their policies. Such plans are not cheap, but neither is being sued for work related stress. †
