More Th>n Specialist Car Insurance a Less Than Good Deal for Women?: Despite the buzz surrounding More Th>n's women's car insurance last week it seems that their sails might be deflated before travelling the first yard. Although offering a woman specific car insurance product for many months now, an update to their website and the growth of their marketing in that area seems to have been noticed. How unfortunate for them that a report by MoneySupermarket has listed More Th>n as one of the most expensive specialist insurer's for women along side niche branded names such as Diamond and Sheilas' Wheels.
It seems that specialist insurers for women do not always provide the best price. Across the board it seems that women do generally pay less than men with a quoted average of 9% but they can end up being more than £300 out of pocket by using specialist insurer's rather than simply applying for regular car cover elsewhere.
Is this extra cost outweighed by the perks of specialist cover? Well, the extras MoreTh>n state they give to women include:
- Priority assistance in emergencies
- Mobile phone locator
- A loan car within 2 hours of an incident if your car is immobilised
- Handbag & shopping cover
- Free replacement child car seats after an accident
- Female friendly garages for repairers
- Vehicle History Checks facility
- Counselling after accident
- A Personal Customer Manager just for you
Considering that the mobile phone locator is becoming standard amongst all recovery companies, the vehicle history check facility is not free (so pointless listing it really), female friendly garages sounds like a marketing technique only, priority assistance to women on their own with children is generally given anyway and the personal customer manager is given to everyone they insure - it's hard to see where they can justify the extra cost. In fact, it seems the only perk is that your handbag and shopping are covered maybe slightly better than by other insurers, but as you keep your handbag on you when you get out the car and you generally take your shopping straight home so the ice cream doesn't melt then is anything really a huge perk over regular car insurance?
Of course, if you've heeded the advice of every financial news and information site over the past ten years then the ever-repeated "shop around" motto will result in you having avoided paying out more than you should. It's hard to fixate all the blame on women only insurers for charging more when the cheaper price was just one more phone call away for the consumer. †
