American Express Travel Insurance offers Gap Year Coverage for Career-Leavers: Gap years are not just for new college grads anymore. Part of this is because of the change in career paths that many Britons now take. Instead of taking a job for life, many of us may change jobs several times in our lifetime. More importantly, as with college grads, a "gap" is opening up between one job and another - which can be anywhere from several weeks to several years.

Rachel Wood (34) told her story of gap year travel through Botswana on gapyearforgrownups.co.uk. There, she related how she enjoyed the wide-open spaces, the intriguing wildlife, and the hospitality of the locals as she took time off from being a busy professional.

Ms. Wood is not alone. Mid-career Britons of all ages are doing the same thing, taking months or years away in Africa, South America or Southeast Asia. Most appear to come back with amazing stories to tell family and friends. One problem, however, is that these sorts of extended journeys are not normally covered by travel insurance (which usually expires in under 90 days). It is a mistake to rely on the insurance offered by some of the tour agencies who may provide travel insurance for adults taking a gap year: these policies are often worded such that receiving a payout is problematic at best. It is an even bigger mistake to rely on the local insurance touted abroad, especially in developing regions that many adult gap travellers prefer to go to.

Instead, "older" Britons planning to take a gap year should prepare all of their insurance requirements before going abroad. This will give the traveller a sense of assurance while on the journey, and provide for care and repatriation in case of a mishap.

American Express UK is now offering Gap Cover, coverage specifically tailored to adult Britons who want to take gap years. Apart from £2 million in liability cover, several features of the plan are tailored specifically to adult gap year travel. These include options such as:

* Golf and business activities cover
* Cover for children up to 21 years of age
* 14-day return to the UK while maintaining the same coverage

The coverage for children may be especially appealing to adults who want to wrap a family outing into an adult gap year (as we've written here previously, adults cannot assume that their children are covered under their travel insurance; they must be specifically named in the policy). You can also select from European Cover, Worldwide Cover, or Worldwide Cover excluding North America and the Caribbean.

Whether it's six months in Thailand or ten in Namibia, gap years taken by professionals are a wonderful way to take a breather from the hectic world of work, and make plans for the next stage in one's life. If family members are brought along, the entire journey can develop into a very memorable shared experience. Before going, however, it's important to make sure that you're covered for anything that might occur while aboard. †
