SwiftCover.com Insurance Release Car Theft Figures: Is your car likely to be stolen? Many people assume that if their car is not a luxury vehicle or high-end sports model, it may be at little risk of being targeted by thieves. Statistics do bear out that these sorts of vehicles are at some risk - both from joy riders seeking to have a spin in a flashy car, and from professional thieves who wish to resell either the car or its parts on the national or international black market.
However, Home Office statistics note that in fact older cars are at higher risk than newer models. These statistics state that only 11% of stolen cars are under 3 years old. Also, contrary to the public conception of cars being most at risk in public car parks, the Home Office noted that 68% of car thefts took place near owner residences. The report noted that part of the reason is that newer cars tend to have more sophisticated anti-theft systems.
Complementary statistics on car thefts were recently released by Swiftcover in July. In its survey, Swiftcover noted the critical importance of location in car theft statistics. Swiftcover noted that London remains the car theft capital of the country, but surprisingly the Midlands are the second-riskiest spot for car thefts. As with the Home Office report, Swiftcover noted that the cars most at risk of being stolen were not necessarily the newest models. The Swiftcover research uncovered that the rather staid Ford Fiesta was the most-stolen car, followed by the Volkswagen Golf.
Combined, the Swiftcover and Home Office reports suggest that ordinary, somewhat older cars near residences are more likely to be stolen than flashy new ones in car parks.
Both reports, as with other car-theft related research, encourage drivers to protect vehicles through keeping doors locked and windows rolled up, even if the car will be unattended for only a few minutes. Also, drivers (as the Swiftcover report especially implies) should never assume that areas outside big cities such as London are automatically safer for cars.
Beyond this, it’s important that the car insurance you have covers its full value in case of theft. Never assume that the car will not be stolen because of it's age and/or location - and certainly it is not wise to underinsure it for that reason.
