Tesco Pet Insurance: the 2nd biggest pet insurer reports the UK as the 2nd biggest pet insurers: Recently, Tesco Finance released research that showed Britain has the second-highest level of pet insurance in the world, behind only Sweden. Head of Tesco Pet Insurance Allan Burns says that he was "not surprised" at the research, as Tesco "has known for a long time that us Brits are pet mad". Complimenting itself, Tesco noted that it was Britain's #2 pet insurer.
However, before we begin patting ourselves on the back as great pet lovers, it's also important to look deeper into Tesco's statistics. For instance, the Tesco figures state that 23% of British pets have insurance. That also means, obviously, that 77% of pets have no insurance whatsoever.
Does all this really matter? The Telegraph released a story as to how so many Britons now treat pets not much differently from family (sometimes better), and become deeply emotionally attached to them. It's not uncommon to see people bring their pets along on holiday or to pamper them with special foods, toys, clothing or other such things. Yet in that same story the Telegraph illustrated how the loss of a pet can be profoundly emotionally disturbing, even driving the owners to grief counselling. As with the loss of a human loved one, some of these pet owners go into mourning or seclusion.
However, even more grievous is when a pet owner has to make a decision to put a pet to sleep because of medical illnesses (which, as we've written before, is the reason for 97% of all pet euthanasia cases). A serious - but treatable - illness such as a heart problem can require surgery and long-term care that can stretch into thousands of pounds. When a pet owner is faced with the dilemma that only a major investment of personal funds can save a dying animal, it can cause acute stress in itself.
Only by insuring your pet can you rest assured that your pet will get the best possible care - a far better situation than having to choose whether to impoverish yourself or save your beloved animal companion.
Despite this obvious deep emotional attachment, however, again, 77% of pet owners neglect to get insurance. This is despite the fact that policies like Tesco's start from under £10 per month. Tesco also provides cover beyond veterinarian bills: such as £1,000 in cover to help you advertise for your animal should it stray. Taking into account the worsening economic climate, Tesco also offers a 20% discount for owners who purchase policies online. †
