A popular movement is spreading further and further into every aspect of our lives – carbon offsetting. You’ve heard the term and the consensus is that it is a helpful thing, environmentally speaking. ClimateCare has been set up to allow people to pay them to reduce carbon emissions if you’re feeling guilty about the ones you are producing. They have a handy online calculator so you can work out just how much CO2 you are creating through your activities which tells you how much you have to pay ClimateCare for them to attempt to reduce CO2 in the air by the corresponding amount.
Last year Yes Insurance created specialist hybrid car cover which gave 25 cash back to people who own those types of vehicles plus donated 25 to ClimateCare. Now they have introduced the concept to their own staff. Although most of their operations are conducted online, the small number of staff they have will have their own travel to and from work offset. Yes Insurance will pay ClimateCare the amount needed to offset each member of staff’s travel depending on the type of transport they use.
According to the State of the Voluntary Carbon Markets 2007 release by EcoSystem Marketplace, in 2006 around 50million was spent, voluntarily, by individuals and companies on carbon offsets equalling around 24 million metric tons of CO2 to be cleaned up.
With people becoming more and more conscientious about greenhouse gases expect to see many more insurance companies highlighting their green efforts in an attempt to impress those looking for an eco-friendly company to insure their cars, homes and businesses.
